As soon as we got the news that we were going into lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic, our team immediately went into brainstorm mode. From home, we wanted to help the situation utilizing our skills and resources. Within a week, we had concept and designed a face touching app for the Samsung Galaxy watch.

Safe Face is the app that helps you avoid touching your face to reduce your chance of catching or spreading bacteria and viruses such as COVID-19. The app uses the sensors in your Samsung smart watch to detect and notify you when you have touched your face.

The Problem
The average person touches their face 16 times per hour. It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touches their own mouth, nose, or eyes.
Our Solution
To design a quick and effective way to help prevent people from touching their face. The app detects in real-time when the user is about to touch their face and sends a friendly reminder.

Working closely with a small internal volunteer group, we decided to leverage the Samsung Galaxy watch as our platform.

Our constraints were limited to the watches capabilities. I wanted the experience to alert the user when they would reach for their face without being overbearing.

As the user reaches for their face, the watch will vibrate while a screen pop up with a counter will notify them.

I mapped out a quick flow, defined the experience, and worked with my jr. product designer to create the wireframes and
visual system.

Our Impact
Through our sample group, we found that users were 57% less likely to touch their face by using the watch app. The idea was to produce a free download-able app that could help in any way during the COVID-19 pandemic.
