The Island is a connected smart home hub that is integrated into your home as a central kitchen light fixture. The kitchen is the center of many homes, where families spend a lot of time together.
We designed The Island, as a light fixture that can surface information, notifications, be your personal concierge, yet still be completely inconspicuous– reducing the need for a cluttering countertop home hub.

The Problem
Our Problem
Home hubs are the new standard in-home connectivity. Current home hubs are clunky, take up counter space, and limited to where outlets are located.
Our Solution
We wanted to evolve the home hub and take it to the next level. We created a more discrete solution that is a kitchen island lamp fixture, with content showing when you need it, and hidden when you don't. We also added an avatar persona, Nora, which acts as your personal home concierge service.

We designed a voice foward – hands and counter-top free experience, so that users may freely move around the kitchen. When engaged, screen content will track alongside the user on a full 360° transparent curved display.

Island has all the typical features of home hubs; voice/video calling, home security, music player, 3P device control, video player, etc. We wanted to create these features in a more personalable way, so that users will interact with Nora for all their needs. She will greet the user in the morning, give them a personalized daily brief on traffic, stocks, sports, or weather reports.
Where we really wanted to push the Island is with connectivity, and building out the Samsung ecosytem. Along with the basic features, Islanp provides monitoring and status reports of Samsung devices and appliances. Notifiying users when the washer/dryer is done, when the oven has reached temperature, or if the fridge water filter needs to be replaced.
Also using ML to help identify ingredients to cook or identitify house hold products or objects. Projection mapping onto counter tops to help cut ingredients or play games. The possibilities are endless with this product.
